"Real-Life" Math opportunities will be provided as students will "shop" the local book store and make change. Additionally, the use of Cuisenaire rods and snap cubes will enhance your child’s number sense by making “numbers” come to life. Mathematical concepts such as problem solving, operations, and number sense will be taught using hands-on manipulatives, while students work cooperatively on various activities. The comprehensive approach taken to teach both reading and writing ensures that our students become both readers and authors promoting autonomy and independence as they engage in the complexities of the curriculum. Leveled readers and weekly reading inventories ensure that our students are challenged. Developing reading strategies to assist concepts of print and promote fluency and comprehension are the cornerstone of our reading series.
Reading fluency and comprehension are at the core of this grade level. Your child will build his/her skills in written expression through daily handwriting practice, sentence construction, proper grammar usage and the overall fundamentals of becoming an avid writer. Curriculum content will include building and enhancing reading skills, phonemic awareness, fluency, and decoding skills. This course is designed to maximize your child’s potential in preparation for first grade.
